Happy New Year, Year 3
Welcome back to 2017 in Year 3. We hope you have had a wonderful holiday with your family.
This term our topic is C’mon Cymru, we will be learning about our local area, Loughor and Wales. We have some exciting trips this term to learn about Wales.
Later this term we will be developing your skills in maths for telling the time. Here is what you are expected to be able to do in Year 3:
tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analogue clock and calculate how long it is to the next hour
read hours and minutes on a 12-hour digital clock using am/pm conventions
calculate start times, finish times and durations using hours, 30-minute intervals and 15-minute intervals
We would like you to make your own clock to use at home. We will give you a paper plate, a split pin and some card to make the hands. Use the clock at home to carry on learning the time. You may have had a new watch for Christmas, you need to wear it!
- look at the hands on the clock, talk about what they are for
- start with minutes past the hour.
- look at the 5 minutes going all the way around
- then move onto minutes to the hour
- how many seconds in a minutes, how many minutes in an hour, how many hours in a day
- If you feel confident with the 5 minutes going around the clock, push yourself onto reading nearest 1 minutes.
Start with the analogue time (hands on a clock) then move onto the digital time , for example your radio alarm clock. Look at the hours and minutes.
Try to tell the time at different times through the day. You need to begin this at home to help your learning in school.
